Mother’s Day is often presented as simple
A day of celebration
Gratitude
Flowers
Family
And for many women, it is
But for many others, it is not
What I see in my practice every year around this time is that Mother’s Day brings up more than people expect
It brings up what is
And what is not
When You Are a Mother but Not Feeling Like Yourself
There are many women who are mothers and still struggling
Struggling with postpartum depression
With anxiety
With exhaustion
With feeling disconnected from themselves
They love their children
And at the same time, they do not feel the way they thought they would
That can be hard to say out loud
Mother’s Day tends to highlight that gap
When You Are Trying to Become a Mother
For women navigating infertility, this day can feel especially heavy
It becomes a reminder of what has not yet happened
Of waiting
Of uncertainty
Of a kind of loss that is not always visible to others
Well meaning messages can land in a painful way
Even celebration can feel isolating
When You Have Experienced Loss
For women who have experienced miscarriage, pregnancy loss, or the loss of a child, Mother’s Day can feel quiet and complicated
There is grief that does not always have a place
There is love without a clear way to express it
And often, there is very little acknowledgment
When Your Relationship With Your Own Mother Is Complicated
Mother’s Day is not just about being a mother
It is also about having one
For some, that relationship is steady and supportive
For others, it is strained, distant, or painful
This day can bring up
Old patterns
Unresolved feelings
A sense of obligation rather than connection
When You Are Carrying Too Much
There are also mothers who are simply overwhelmed
They are managing everything
The schedules
The emotional needs
The responsibilities
And while they may be appreciated, they are also depleted
Mother’s Day may include recognition
But it does not always include relief
Why This Matters
There is nothing wrong with celebrating motherhood
But it is important to acknowledge that this day is not experienced the same way by everyone
When we only show one version of it, many women quietly feel like something is wrong with them
There is not
There is just a wider range of experience than we tend to talk about
A Different Way to Approach This Day
Instead of focusing on what this day is supposed to look like, it can be more useful to ask
What do I actually need right now
For some, that is connection
For others, it is space
For some, it is celebration
For others, it is simply getting through the day
All of those responses are valid
Where This Fits in Care
At the Washington Center for Women’s and Children’s Wellness, we see the full range of this
Women navigating motherhood at every stage
Women trying to become mothers
Women grieving
Women feeling overwhelmed
We approach maternal mental health with the understanding that these experiences are complex and deserve thoughtful care
The Bottom Line
Mother’s Day can be joyful
And it can also be complicated
Both can be true
If this day feels harder than expected, it does not mean something is wrong
It means something is there that deserves attention
A Better Way to Hold This Day
You do not need to force this day to look a certain way
You do not need to match anyone else’s experience
What matters is being honest about where you are
If you are celebrating, let yourself enjoy it
If you are grieving, let that be acknowledged
If you are exhausted, take that seriously
This day does not define your experience as a mother, a daughter, or a woman
It is just one day
If This Resonates
If this day brings up more than you expected, it is worth paying attention to
Not to judge it
But to understand it
At the Washington Center for Women’s and Children’s Wellness, we work with women across all of these experiences
Not just when things fall apart
But when something feels off and you cannot quite explain why
You do not have to push through it
You can understand it
And once you understand it, things can start to feel more manageable
